Kevin O'Connell's orchestral overture 'The young are always right' will be performed at the National Concert Hall Dublin on March 5th 2012. The main work is Mahler's Symphony No. 2. This concert with 300 performers celebrates the 20th anniversary of the orchestra

Kevin O’Connell’s Seminar on variation form will take place at the Royal Irish Academy of Music from Monday 30th January to Wednesday 1st of February 2012.
On Wednesday 29 February next, the String Trio will be performed in the RIAM.
The young are always right is scheduled for the National Concert Hall, Dublin, on March 5th along with Mahler 2 played by the RIAM SO and Chorus.
On 18 January 2012 Ceimeanna was played by Therese Fahy at the NCH.

O'Connell's essay on Hindemith's contrapuntal teaching, 'Hindemith's voices', has just appeared in the June 2011 edition of Musical Times. Hindemith devoted a large part of his career to thinking out his approach to this subject, and the ideas he came up with are fascinating and original ones.
O'Connell will present an edited version of this paper at the forthcoming Society of Musicology Conference to be held at the RIAM, Dublin, June 24th-26th. He will also conduct a performance of Berio's Folksongs at this event. For the Conference schedule, click here.

O'Connell and the composition department of the Royal Irish Academy of Music recently hosted a very successful String Quartet Day with guest performers the Con Tempo Quartet and guest composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Sir Peter expressed warm praise for the work of student composers Leonie Bluett, Fergal Mulloy, Breffni O'Byrne and Sebastian Adams. Sir Peter was made Fellow of the RIAM and the ceremony was followed by a performance of his Naxos Quartet no. 8.
O'Connell's address to the 2008 International CG Jung Conference in Zurich, entitled I wrote what I heard; late thoughts on The Rite of Spring, is now available in book form. The book is called Music and Psyche:Contemporary psychoanalytic explorations (Spring Journal Books); obtainable from Amazon UK (below left) and Amazon USA (below right)

Ceimeanna at the Hugh Lane Gallery and in the USA
Pianist Therese Fahy will play Kevin O’Connell’s piano work Ceimeanna (Steps) at the Hugh Lane Gallery on Easter Sunday (April 24th) at 12.00 noon, and at four venues on the Eastern seaboard of the USA. For more details go to Therese’s Facebook page. This is worth checking because the programme varies somewhat for every concert.

Briefly to let you know about the world premiere of my new Symphony on January 11th. It will be performed by the National Symphony Orchestra with Gavin Maloney conducting. Note that this is a lunchtime event and that admission is free. It is also a launch-time event, being the first of the RTE Horizons series.

O'Connell has just completed a new commisson for the string ensemble of the East Ayrshire education authority in Scotland, also involving some 30 string players from Northern Ireland. You will find a blog about this project here.
